"This is just a starting point," said Desjardin. "We need to do more research to determine whether these are really the only poisonous species in North Carolina or whether there are others."

So far there have been no reports of anyone becoming ill after eating a poisonous mushroom in North Carolina, but it's important to be aware of their presence nonetheless. If you're ever unsure about whether a mushroom is safe to eat, it's best not to take any chances and simply discard it.
